hot apple pie and cheddar dip - holiday appetizer

this appetizer is sure to be a big hit at any party or holiday gathering – its a great combination of salty and sweet! other than serving amazing food, here are some great tips for hosting a ‘friendsgiving’!

ask your guests to bring something – thanksgiving is a holiday so thoroughly intertwined with family, cooking, and baking that asking someone to bring something will not only lighten your load as the host, but also give them the opportunity to bring something that represents their family and will make them feel more at home. once i have the guest list, i will reach out to them individualy and see if there is something specific they would like to bring – a special family recipe or favorite item. that way when i am menu planning later i can be sure to fill in the gaps.

plan for lots of appetizers – lets be honest, the turkey may take longer than you thought. as the hostess, you want to be sure that everyone who came to your home for thanksgiving with empty bellies ready to fill up will be happy from the moment they walk in to the moment they sit at the table. often , these are the favorite dishes of the night! think savory, sweet, hot, and cold – having something in each of these categories will satisfy your guests until that turkey is ready!

assigned seating – try to assign seating! whatever your strategy -couples sitting together, kids table separate- having assigned seating makes your guest feel that they are welcome and thought of with a simple personalized touch.

plan small activities – even though some guests will whine, gripe, and grumble at an activity, they secretly love it! for a ‘friendsgiving’ try games or conversations starters that allow your guests to talk about their families and traditions. we always have a ‘thankful tree’ where the guests write what they are thankful for on a leaf and hang it on the tree. if your friends are particularly outgoing, plan for something more involved like charades! (my hubby would hate me if i planned this game so know your audience)
